Planning is well underway for a two-day CPD program of interest to lawyers who practice in the area of wills and estates. Preparing wills can seem deceptively easy to new practitioners, however, an aging population and the growth of estate litigation show that preparing wills can be fraught with hidden traps. With a slate of experienced practitioners to guide you, this program is here to help!

Barney Christianson, Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP

Day one is focused on the fundamentals and setting yourself up for success. This will be essential for lawyers starting out in the area, and will serve as a good refresher for more experienced practitioners. Topics will include:

  • file and client management;
  • using precedents and planning forms;
  • testing for capacity;
  • taking and preserving notes;
  • estate planning; and
  • will drafting.

Day two will touch on more advanced topics. There will be legislative and caselaw updates both locally and nationally, as well as a comprehensive discussion of advanced planning considerations including:

  • beneficiary designations;
  • estate planning agreements; and
  • dealing with blended families.

Registrants are strongly encouraged to purchase the 3rd edition of Drafting Wills in Canada: A Lawyer’s Practical Guide. Upon registration for the CPD program, you will receive a discount code for 20% off the purchase of the Guide.
