There are hundreds of screening tools for abuse and domestic violence, but never one created specifically for family violence under the law. And how could there be?

With legislatures creating different definitions, and case law refining them, by the time a tool is developed, the culture and laws have changed. So, while many tools for screening abuse and assessing risk can be excellent, they often leave practitioners and survivors in the dark. Areas of family violence go unexplored, and survivors feel unheard.

This session offers participants the opportunity to build their own family violence screening tool, drawing from interdisciplinary practices and strategies that support survivors to disclose. At the end of this session, you will be able to use the Family Law Act not just to screen for family violence but to build a framework for better interviewing.
